406 JBL box - What is it??

Post by johnway »

Hi all,
My 406 HDI Executive has a compartment in the n/s rear cargo area which contains a Clarion 6 CD changer - the opposite o/s compartment has a black JBL box mounted in it - I haven't a clue what this is : please enlighten me !!

Many thanks,
John.

I Blame it all on my Dad!! (Sadly had to give up driving & his 2nd BX) but Mum still has a C1.

It is an amp for the 8-speaker JBL audio system.

I thought it was a Coupé only option - seems not!

John, if anything like the coupe, probably worth changing the back shelf speakers at some point...

I put some half decent ovals in there (pioneer I think).. useful improvement.. you may need some slight alterations to the metal work..

Hello jgra1,
Thanks for the suggestion - I have still yet to give the sound system a good shake down but shall bear your views in mind when I get around to it. I am still learning about my Pug and fine tuning the rear end job just done on my C5 - never enough hours in the day.

All the best,
John.

Interesting note on the rear speakers - my 605 ones have suffered complete disintegration of the rubber surround. They went from weak sounding to farty, then bloody awful in short order! Could similar fate have befallen your 406C speakers?

I bought a refoaming kit off the net - hopefully it will arrive this week and I can have them back in for evaluation very soon. The appeal here was no butchery or loss of original looks.

hi Adam, yep this is certainly common for 406 coupes.. the rears always go after 10 years or so..

I think my new pioneers were only £20-30 from ebay.. and they went in quite easily..

to be honest, with modern headunits powerful as they are (if upgrading this part), most people actually rip the JBL out, disconnect the rear tweeters and install some 2 or 3 ways in (my pioneers are 3 way i think)

I am incredibly relieved to hear that the coupé ones die also.

First a PO of my car was implying that I'd damaged them, then he decided it must be the immediate previous owner...
