Peugeot 406 2.0 petrol engine

Post by carlo14 »

Evening all.

I often see the D9 406 2.0 petrol offered with a 'silver top' engine, and presume this is the later (206 GTI?) engine which they put in around 2000.

Can anyone tell me if this is significantly better than the earlier engine? I find my D8 406 a bit lacking in torque and it'd be nice if the later engine addressed that. Also it seems like it can be chipped a bit, anyone any experience again?

Cheers!

The later ones have the plastic silver tops as you've noticed.

I do not know if they would be a straight swap or not. The GTi 206 one has more power.

The timing belt arrangement is slightly different on the later ones, sometimes the belt came with a compulsory (but no recall) tensioner too.

16valve engines in general do have torque higher up the rev range compared to 8valve engines though.

They 'feel' more eager the later ones but that might be the way they are mapped, not sure. :)

My wife's 406 estate has the 2.0 16v engine with the AL4 auto box.

It has just clocked 166500 miles and still runs like a swiss watch! Quite torquey and will pull from low down. Will pick up its skirt and go when required without running out of steam even well into three digits on the speedo!

Get the impression that it is a bit overlooked in favour of the HDI for obvious economy reasons although we get around 33mpg on short trips and around 45mpg on the motorway. Whisper it, but it is probably more reliable than the diesels if not as common!

Nice comfy relaxed drive.
Quite straightforward to work on; no turbo's or intercoolers to fuss over, everything is as you would expect from a relatively modern petrol engined car!
I have read you can tweak it for a few more bhp if required.

I can definately recommend it as a good motor. :)

If you want bottom end torque you need to fit a diesel engine :D

So - that's what Olivia Newton-John was signing about in Physical, way back when. "Let me hear your bottom torque..."

When you get over 200,000 miles on it I'll think about changing my mind.
