Hmm. Got me thinking now. Would the box take the extra from the turbo? Also is it electronically controlled or just a straight torque converter?
I wanted to put an auto in it anyway but the 306 came up at the right time and price so that's what went in.
Always room for improvement.

As far as I am aware its completely mechanical. That's partly what attracted me to it.

I thought it was that slightly nasty 3 electronic controlled speed unit the 106's had (rare) but no thankfully it is not :D

It should be the same box as the 205 auto and the 405 auto (the four speed unit) and the early 306's (pre 97), although the final drive / gear ratio's are likely to be different. If you fitted the petrol autobox it would run out of revs quite quickly and drink fuel.

I think power wise it should cope to be honest.

I'm hoping Jim see's this post and can offer some of his expert thoughts on this matter.

Hi Richard

The 2.5 has a hydraulic clutch but the 2.1 is cable, I think that the 2.1 Xantia is hydraulic. I have a 2.5 parked here that belongs to someone else and the clutch on my 2.1 is even lighter than that  .

The 2.1 XM is available with an auto box, in fact most of those for sale now are auto - but I wouldn't have one

hi Siraff a bit late this..

my Xant TD had a new Valeo clutch fitted about 2 years ago by me.. I greased and cleaned what I could while I was there.. the new clutch was nice, but about half way betwen light and heavy I would say.. it was a little snatchy when trying to make a smooth pull away, so a couple of weeks ago I finally replaced the cable..

now, with a new cable, yep, its much smoother to engange the clutch .. but.. it's now too heavy by half  ..

not much help but goes to show the routing is important.. no idea what I have done wrong but will look again over the weekend..

If the XM 2.1 Estate I owned had been a manual,I would've kept it.The auto box just didn't seem to be matched to the engine.
