307 - front lower ball joint renewal ??

Post by sooty »

307 Hdi Rapier

My L/H/F lower ball joint is worn at the base of the hub to track control arm.

Any problems in replacing these or special tools needed.

Thanks

You will need a special socket to unscrew and refit.

I have a very deep (read: inches!) socket that will undo / refit them. I cannot remember the size as I've not used it for ages.

I do know that the usual tool suppliers could not find one 'that' deep in that size.

as you say its big and deep! I can not remember the size.Best way is to get the new ball joint and go to Sealey,Draper,Snap-On etc and get the correct socket to fit it.It will cost anything from £25- £50!!! Or go to a Peugeot Dealer, slip a mechanic £5 to borrow his??

There is a proper tool to do them at the dealer, although from memory this is just a huge socket.

It took my tool dealer ages (a good month or two) to actually find one that was deep enough, a normal one will do for removal as you can just cut the thread off then the socket will fit but that's no good for refitting obviously. :)

thanks

I've ordered the ball joint from a motor factor near-by.

From a Citroen site, for a C4 which is the same ball joint from flea bay. The socket size is 41mm A/F.

thanks

Yes it screws up into the Hub via a Hex. headed ball joint.

In the end because of time was against me and could not get a socket off the shelf and paying excess carriage costs etc. I removed the hub from the strut and track control. Placed it in a vice and drived the joint undone with a blunt chiesel and hitter against the edge of a flat the old fashion way. Main problem then was rust in the threads, but a little heat on the hub and WD40, presto.

But I think a flat type combination spanner maybe better as with a deep socket you have to keep it upright while trying undo the joint with its shallow hex head.

might work if you split the joint fit te combi spanner then connect it up again loosely to save straining on the drive shaft untill it is loosend

thanks,

I doubt very much you would do this on the car with either a socket or spanner as the ball joint is very tightly screwed into the hub and would need to be done held in a vice on a bench.

that was a clutching at straws idea, I had to do the xantia's in a vise as well.

A small garage with the correct socket and an air gun would charge 1/2Hr labour, I would! Was it worth all this hassle? Sorry sooty.
