Spider, I dont agree with your point that they shouldn't go out of tolerance. Many cars and motorbikes have shim and bucket and its part of the service schedule to adjust then clearances. The fact that the hydraulic tappet was invented indicates that valve clearances are not set for life. I do agree they are not easy to change, to check is simple enough however.
That said I dont know about the dw10 set up either. If thats what the hdi is.
What will it cost to get the compression checked? The problem is getting it checked from cold.
you may have to leave it with a garage overnight.

XUDs of all flavours can lose valve clearance sufficient to prevent easy starting - some do, some don't - no idea why!
However, DW10 HDi has hydraulic tappets*, so that is not the problem here. You've got to start by getting a decent cranking speed!
* which confer another advantage - have a cambelt failure on an XUD and the valves likely smash the camshaft and caps, with probably a bent valve or two. Have the same on an HDi and it just breaks a few rockers which is relatively easily rectified without taking the head off.
