any ideas on this PEUGEOT 806 QUICKSILVER 2.0 HDI

The local main dealer has stated that there is a problem with the engine coolant not circulating, which could be a simple fix but on the other hand may not be. When looking under the bonnet the engine coolant has vented from the expansion/top-up chamber so the engine is covered by rust coloured coolant, but the car can be driven fine and the temperature gauge reads normal when driven

if the coolant wasn't circulating then the engine would overheat very quickly
given that even the newest 806 is now 9 years old I'm not quite sure why you are still going to the main dealer
find an experienced independant mechanic who knows what he's talking about

Could be the water pump impeller has detached (during the freezing conditions when the coolant may have partially frozen if the strength was weak) or, more likely, the head gasket has failed between a cylinder and the water jacket.
