How long did you wait for them to open?
Yes, several can be duff, part of a duff batch probably.

5 mins would be adequate - some folks expect them to snap open when warmed.

I`ve worked on these TU engines for years and one out of a hundred just will not bleed properly.A few months ago I had the same symptoms as yours AFTER! refitting the head with new w/pump,stat etc.I was convinced I`d messed up the job somewhere, but spent hrs doing "force bleeding" etc and it suddenly came right.Dont ask me why,the cars still running like a dream.

That used to be a problem with XUD engines, many a head was cracked by inadequate bleeding so that could well be your problem. Disconnect one of the heater hoses and fill the system until water flows freely, if it doesn't, start the engine.

Bleed valve should be fine - sometimes it helps to make a header tank, cut the bottom off a 2 coke bottle and shove it into the filler like s funnel, but tight, may need some blue tack to seal it sufficiently, then fill it right up (assistant helps) and open the bleed caps.
We did my son's 306 the other day and it went fine without the header tank.

I would first determine there is adequate coolant in the system! It may be well underfilled.

Just a thought?when you open the bleed screw at the stat` end of the cylinder head WITH the engine running do you get good jet of water??in other words are you getting good pressure in the system? It has been known for the impeller of the water pump to fail and not circulate the water.ie hot block/cold rad.

Oldpug been at it all day with coke bottles etc etc and still got hot engine + cold rad and get a great jet of water (like somebody having a *iss) and it is hot as my hand can tell you.
So back to the start and get a new thermostat the third one from a different spares place, i have had two new line Thermostats is there other makes around?????...it's to car spares on Sunaday then for me.
Also thanks for the info Oldpug.... :? :? :? :? :?
