hello i have just bought a pergeot 306 02 plate 70,000 miles good looking motor. checked under the hood and noticed rust around rocker cover also there is a thick rubber seal which i prized back and more rust where the cover joins the engine what could this be cheers .

Check the engine number is the same as the one on the log book, it may have had another engine fitted from a donor vehicle that has been lying around a breakers yard for some time...........or, is the car an accident repair?, it also might have been lying dormant for a while..........

The later ones (I'm assuming its a 1.4 or 1.6) , the TU rocker covers do seem to rust.

The seal sounds like its gone hard, simply replace it. Clean the baffle plate out while you are at it (it will fall out when you take the rocker cover off anyway)

Sounds like the cover is oil tight - very unusual, most don't rust because they are oily.
