406 damper spring knock

Post by woodhead722 »

O/S front spring replaced at garage 7 days ago. (Thanks road bumps! )

Since the repair there is a knocking / rattle which the garage said was the anti roll bar link, - replaced but did not cure.

The mechanic has now noticed that the new spring catches slightly on the inner wing, about half way up. (As if the diameter is too big).

The knock is reproduced by kicking the tyre tread or hand knocking the spring.

Any advise please - it's going back Monday, and he says he may have more idea when he gets the 'leg' off.

sounds like they have fitted the wrong spring or not seatted it corectly,

if you post your chassis/VIN No. i will get you the OE part No., then they can cross ref that to a factors spring,

also the usualy cause fdor broken springs is week shockers,

It sounds as if the top mount/bearing/and spring support plate are not assembled correctly. Its a tricky job to get the "sandwich" to come together, even more so if your using a poor spring compressor?

thanks malcolm, it's now sorted.

The top mounting bearing was clapped which the garage did not notice when the spring was replaced.

I thought it would be something to do with the top mount assy.I hope the garage paid for all the rework.I cant believe they replaced a spring without stripping out the top mount.Seized top bearings on Peugeots are a common cause of spring problems.

Unfortunately I paid, under mild protest.
New Spring fitting & part £75
New anti roll linkage & fit £30 (not problem but WAS poor)
Sort knock problem by new bearing in top £58 (reduced to £52 when questioned)

I think he thought it MAY have been my fault by going on a bad pot hole, or he was trying it on. He also fitted another new spring (old one was not at fault and only on 1 week, very few miles with weather). He told me he was now stuck with a spring if supplier would not take back.

I thought it would have been part only for bearing as the spring etc had been off already, so I left disappointed paying £52.

why did they fit another new spring if there was no problem with it,

maybe it had damage caused by being baddly fitted or wrong spring in the first place,

it would be interesting to see both the original sring and the one they have just removed,

sounds like someone's telling porkies

It amazes me how some garages never own up to a fault, look after a customer, and just charge, charge etc. Now that you have paid and left there is not much you can do other than never go back, tell your mates how useless they are.Find yourself a small independent Peugeot/Citroen specialist, its always best to have someone who knows the make.

The original spring was broken low down, so I had options get collected, donate a tyre as the bottom of spring carved it up, or cut the spring with grinder and crawl to garage 3/4 mile.

That's what i was thinking on collection - I honestly expected to pay for bearing and have probably free fitting.

Their service is usually decent and they are very near. I WOULD like to use again but will decide next time I need them.

Nothing to the best of my knowledge, maybe when removing they assumed the spring was U/S, so fitted another before noticing / checking the bearing.
