407 HDi 2.0 136 ...........hellllllllllppppppppp!!!!!!!
Hi, new to the forum so do please bear with me. I have an 04 136BHP 407 and for the past year (yes year) i have had the following problem. Every 4/600 miles the engine sounds flat and deep. It hesitates badly and feels very lumpy. When this happens i have 2 x options. Drive very gently and it passes or drive as normal and the MAGICAL engine management light comes on. If anyone could offer me any assistance i would so so grateful. Love the car but driving me mad. As a result i never drive above 3k revs and know i am missing out on so much more fun. Thanks again in advance for any help given.

Hi!
The FAP (its a French abbreviation!!!) is a particulate filter that fits in front of the catalytic converter and is used to burn the emitted particles into fine ash by a high-temperature regeneration process initiated by the engine-management control unit.
When the vehicle reaches the specified mileage, a warning of this is shown on the Driver's centre dash display along with the illumination of the engine management indicator light, and the specified procedure to initiate the regeneration is to drive in 4th at about 70-75 mph at an engine speed of about 4000 RPM for at least fifteen minutes.
The FAP filter has sensors at each side of it which monitor the pressure-difference across it and when a blocked FAP unit results in the pressure difference exceeding the maximum limit set by the engine ECU, a fault code will be set and a warning displayed.
The dealer procedure for clearing the fault is to simply replace the FAP with a reconditioned unit, but it ***is*** possible to remove them and blast them through with a high-pressure water-jet at home.
The Fuel Additive used in the FAP regeneration process is a cerium-based compound called Eolys Fluid which burns at a very high temperature, and a small amount is injected into the fuel tank by the additive-control ECU each time the fuel-tank is refilled, and it is stored in a small plastic reservoir fitted at the back of the fuel-tank. The centre display will indicate "FUEL ADDITIVE LOW" when this Eolys container needs refilling - I think it needs doing every 48,000 miles!!!
It ***is*** possible to buy this fluid in a bottle yourself from fleabay with instructions and a refilling kit, but I ***MUST*** emphasise that this compound is ***extremely corrosive and poisonous*** and must only be handled with the utmost care and respect!!!
Any of the chappies on this Forum who have PP2000 tackle can reset a Particulate Fault by the way!!!
The PP2000 can also be used to initiate a forced regeneration in locations where a long-section of high speed road isn't readily available, but I've heard that this actually can produce flames, sparks and all sorts of things out of the exhaust whilst the procedure takes place, and the engine's timing belt ***MUST*** be in good condition before attempting the procedure as the engine needs to be accelerated to maximum governed speed for an extended period of time to carry it out!!!
Hope this helps!!!

Sounds like you need to get it on a proper diag computer - preferably when it's trying to regen to try and see what's wrong with it. It would be better if you can read live data to determine why it's going haywire - however, letting the light come on and reading the fault codes (again with a decent machine, not a generic scanner!) might point to the fault. Unfortuantely I can see this going one way - the way that involves ££££
