OK thanks Paul. The Hdi XM sounds good to me but I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for projects like that now.

I can see three including myself.

Also, even if it does have a DMF they can be swapped for a Valeo four part conversion kit which my 806 has.

I agree with everything which has been said, the 2.0HDi 110 8vs are brilliant engines.

You have thought about a Xantia 2.0HDi estate then Peter? Not quite as big as a 406 i dont think, but probably more comfortable.

C5s are coming down in price now, there are some real bargains to be had and the estate has a good, square and spacious boot.

Hi Chris

I am slowly being converted to Hdi, I had thought about a Xantia but its got all the agro of the XM but not all the perks, I am still running an XM estate but have almost given up on getting another nice late one - unless you want to sell yours of course :D

My wife did have a nice ZX estate but in a moment of madness I sold it to a friend of ours and bought the 5 series, not really my cup of tea, maybe 40 years ago :? I thought of the 406 as its still relativly simple, or at least the early ones are and I think the ride is passable but I am open to suggestions.

Your best bet would be to find a Y reg 2.0HDi 110 406 estate, that way it should not be multiplexed but it will have the cheaper road tax.

I dont think anyone has answered the DMF question yet, i think a Y reg 406 will have one, though im not sure when they were introduced, it could be that all 406 110s had them.

Your right, a good Xm is getting hard to find now, especially an estate, like hens teeth.

My understanding has always been that the 90 bhp has the BE3 gearbox and hence a standard clutch whilst the 110 bhp has the ML5 gearbox which has a "pull" type release mechanism and therefore a DMF (unless a Valeo conversion kit has been fitted).

So, does the Xantia HDI 110 bhp (without DMF) have a BE3 or an ML5 gearbox?

Also is it correct that all BE3 transmissions have a cable operated clutch with the bellcrank thing on top of the transmission, whilst all ML5s are hydraulic?

If so then it's quite easy to tell when looking at a car which transmission it has and therefore whether it has a DMF or not.

Xantia HDi 110 uses a ML5 box with Hyd clutch, but no DMF....I was led to believe that the 406 110 HDi always had a DMF :?

2004 Pug 406 HDi 90's switch to Hydraulic Clutch! Serious! Ive seen one! and it was defenatly a 90bhp too!!

I would have thought the 406 would have switched to DMF in 2000, when citroen switched to the C5, as no Xantias had DMF's as said above...

IIRC the injectors are a nightmare to get out on th 16v models are they not??

I've had a 90bhp estate xantia and it was fine other than the fuel cooler being a PITA and underpowered, and my dad has one in his mk1 C5 and its worked without issue since he bought a year or two ago and it has silly low miles, circa 50k for a 52 plate car :)

Our 2003 Picasso HDi 90 has a hydraulic clutch on a BE3 (4?) 'box... one of the main reasons for buying it over a Berlingo, which used cable clutches, and all the ones we tried were heavy - not good for bad backs!

110 HDi is FTW - 90 is rough and underpowered by comparison - pity that the Picasso only comes with 110 BHP in 1.6 HDi FAP form - can't afford one of those yet, and it could do with a few more horses under the bonnet
