406 1.9 2.1 timing belt mileage and 0-60 times

Post by philb »

whats the general feeling about mileage for a timing belt before it gets changed
and i would be realy interested in your 0-60 times just for fun of it
my 406 1.9 td estate is doing 14.4 0-60
before i start tuning her

Up until 98 (which will be a 2.1 and probably a 1.9 as the HDi replaced them) , every 72k miles or 5 (maybe 6) years if you did not do that mileage.

If in doubt, change it though ;) , a belt breakage on the XUD is very destructive (you cam ends up in three pieces) and given the design of the cam bearings, a replacement head is usually the best 'fix'

I do remember recommending it every 5 years if they had not done that mileage.

Probably worth changing water pump at that time too.

How are you measuring 0-60? I tested my 405 with a little application that uses my phone's internal G-meter. With only adjustments to the max fuel screw and waste gate, it got 12.8 running on 100% WVO. That was my first and only run, I think I could squeeze more out of it :D

That's what they recommended, bearing in mind that's with a genuine belt (which are quite strong)

As a better guide, I do mine at about 30k to 40k

Running 18psi, which is about as much as I'll go with the standard top mount intercooler. I think the 406 has a front mount though? I might reduce the max fueling and try adjusting the on boost fueling. What's an as3 pump? The 405 is also a fair bit lighter than the 406, so will always be a bit quicker like for like.

Boost gauge is the first step, a standard engine will turn out 13psi. Loads of guides on the internet, most for the 306 but it still applies.

It's a good job the maximum fuel screw is hidden. Sure it will give you more go but if overcooked it can cause the engine to overspeed and off-load, say in the event of a missed gear or during the MOT test it can overspeed to the point of possibly going bang.

MOT Man: "it passed but the engine is toast..."

The boost overfuelling screw on top of the pump seems to give good results...

When you do the belt, do the waterpump at the same time. If you don't it's almost guaranteed the waterpump will fail shortly afterward...
