If I open the driver's window fully the radio goes off! It comes back on again if I let it up just a few cms.
Wiring behind the door panel?

Probably yes the speaker wires are being caught in the mechanism and the short to earth has switched the radio off (safety cutout on radio I guess)

I re-read your topic twice as my first thought was door loom wiring, although mostly it only seems 306's have this 'issue'
