405 heater fan problem

Post by mark21td »

I'm going to have a look at a 405td tomorrow, this one
Autotrader

But it has a problem with the heater fan, it only works on full.
Any ideas why ?

I think common problems with the heater are: heater motor control unit, worn brushes on the motor, or what happened to me, dodgey solder joints on the fan slider on the dash. Either way shouldn't be too hard to fix, and if that's the only electrical problem you'll be doing well

I hope it's the only one, but I'll find out later.
This is an L reg and has no climit controle so it's not what I'm used to.
Aslo he doesn't know if this a Bosch or Lucas, not thats it's a major problem as it's for my sister-inlaw, but the option of veg would be nice.

It's a good price though, with 9 munths Tax and 5 munths MOT.

I beg to differ, I've seen more Lucas than Bosch 405 TD's, it's 50/50 at best, that said this ones a Bosch and it was replaced at 80k.

The car was in prity good shape with full S/H and drives realy well, with no smoke, although the guy said it didn't have climit control it does, which is a bonus.

On the down side the heater is luke worm at best so that and the fan will be the first jobs to be done.

Really? I've seen loads of 405 TD engine bays, never seen a Lucas! A Lucas TD isn't even listed on the Biomotors database, but I've heard rumours that they do exist.

Did you buy it? Sounds like a good 'un. Good price too considering FSH and AC, you'd think folk would put that in their advert :?

if the blower fan is like the 406 with air con it will have the speed control unit mountted on the fan base, the usual fix is replace the two transistors,

i have followed the link Jim posted for Farnells and purchased and fitted new transistors to my daughters P reg 406, very easy if your good with a soldering iron, i used a 40W iron and it work well,

i dont think a lower wattage iron will do though, as you need to melt the solder right through the crimped eyelets fitted into the PCB, and you can only to do this from one side of the PCB,

if you buy them from Farnnels online there is no minnimum order, but over the phone there is a 30 quid minnimum order,

carridge is free also,

For those that are not to keen on trying their own soldering repairs there are a few NOS 6441.78 blower modules currently offered on ebay for around £50.

Thanks for the info guys,
but I just changed the whole blower unit for one I had in the shed (I knew it would come in usefull when I removed it, 10years ago) and It's working fine now.

Yes, I did buy it, but it's not for me, it's for my sister inlaw and she's very happy with it.

I also bled the cooling system so the heater now works.

The air con isn't working, on giving the car a closer look over it looks like some of the A/C pipework has been removed so it's not worth bothering with.

What battorys do the key fob's use (RF type) as there arn't any in there ?
