406 1.9 TD exec cutting out

Post by mark21td »

I may be going to look at a 1.9 TD exec tomorrow
This one
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... priceasc/u...

I've spoken to the owner and he said it cuts out and his mechanic has said it's the needle lift sensor in the injector (a nice easy job)
can this course it to cut out, I thought it made it tick over unevenly.
or could this just be blocked filter or an air issue (which is still an easy fix)
I forgot to ask if it's a keypad job or not but I thought you didn't get this on the exec,s (if it is can these be disconected like the Xantia's).

Hi Mark,

The Needle Lift Sensor being duff makes 'em run roughly for sure but normally they don't cut out but given the timing will be a yard out, it's possible, especially in the cold. Makes 'em hard to start at times too...

See if the tacho works. If it doesn't then the TDC and NL sensors are duff and the poor old ECU will be clueless...

Test the sensor by checking its resistance. Should be 109 ohms or thereabouts.

Happy viewing!

Just had a look at getting one day insurance cover as I'm going to look at the car tomorrow and it's come up with
"406 police TD" when I put in the reg number, but it's advertised as an Exclusive ?

One another site it comes up as an "406 LX TD" ?

I wonder if it's worth looking at now.

What's all that about? Were they ever used by the law then?

Still worth a gander I'd have thought, the DVLA is not infallable with vehicle descriptions.

If it is an ex-police vehicle, it could be a bit special - the old blues and twos might be useful for getting somewhere in a hurry one day

(just joking, I guess it is VERY illegal to use blues and twos as a private individual...)

Interesting, might have been an undercover police car or for another use. Then again its not unlike the DVLA site info to be a bit misleading.

The police seem to use all kinds of cars, i even saw a white unmarked C5 pull someone over with flashing police lights years ago and a white honda civic too. Though they do usually use white and this one is silver ...

Looks tidy though, good cars the 406s, i like them.

Most of the Police cars in Wiltshire are Honda's, I suppose they are trying to support local industry there.

All of the Plod cars in London have been silver for a few years now, something to do with resale value, not quite sure how that works with vans though.

I think I'll still go and have a look, as you say it looks clean and it's cheep,
Should be well serviced if it was a police car.

Police in Middlesbrough used to patrol the A66 in a V6 406. Often used to see it pulling people over in the 50mph limit.

Up here they are always Fords or Skodas.

There was talk of the police using silver cars throughout the UK, but it hasn't really came about.

No one ever buys a new Focus in white, so you can bet everyone i see in the town has two police officers in it. Silver might be a better idea for that reason too.

Though the faster cars here are silver and there is a dark blue Focus RS too, unmarked.

Very nice, they must have happy police

I saw a t reg Skoda Felica police car in a village not too far from here about a month ago  the short straw or what. Mind police around the Beverly area had Protons as their panda cars, about 3 years ago. Im not sure what is worse

Had a look at the car today,
What a heap
it was an lxs not exec
rev counter starts at 2,500 rpm
speedo read 40mph when only doing about 10
clutch bites at the bottom and has a bodge at the gear box end of the cable
engine low on power high on noise (like the cam belt has sliped)
and thats just a few of the faults

But the injector sensor read 98 on my meater and the engine knocked like mad when disconected so was probably working fine.

Needless to say I didn't buy it.

Just to add a bit more the British Transport Police (BTP) used the Pug 306 and 405, they also used some despatch vans.
