Bleed Valves

Post by OwenP »

How many bleed valves should I expect to find on a 1996 P reg 1.9td 405?

So far I've got one on the radiator itself, at the opposite end from the filler cap, and one on the hose from behind the fuel filter housing to the radiator.

I have recently had a problem with an airlock on long runs, car runs fine to start with but once switched off it shows no water when I try to set off again.

Have bled everything today using the two valves mentioned above. However once they had been bled (hot and cold to allow the thermostat to open) letting the engine run before closing it all up I notice if the engine was reved the level of water in the header tank dropped, and then returned when the revs dropped. Is this normal or have a missed a bleed valve and thus still got an airlock?

Cheers guys.

Is there not one somewhere on the pipework that feeds the heater matrix, not sure but there was on the ZX with the TD engine.

OK forgive my ignorance, but I'm not 100% sure where the heater matrix is, is it the block that looks similar to the rad but much smaller on the passenger side right up near the windscreen?

If it is then I couldn't see one, does it differ for a car with A/C?

You can't see the heater matrix itself as it is inside the car but you will see 2 pipes that go to the bulkhead behind the engine, these are the flow & return pipes to the matrix, if you follow these there could well be a bleed screw on one of them.

Just to add,
if you look at the photo in post number 7 in the link below you can see the bleed valve at the top right...it is the same as a tyre valve dust cap.

Just had another look at the car, can't see any pipes resembling that layout, think I've found the heater pipes, much bigger pipes than those and no sign of a bleed valve.

Checked the coolant level now that the car has cooled, slight hiss as I released the radiator cap, not sure but I suspect a vacuum where the water has cooled.

Still not sure where the water was going when the engine reved.
