Engine run on

Post by bobq »

I wonder if anyone has any idea how to fix my problem on my '96 406 2.1 td.
The runs fine with no probs, the issue arises when i turn off the ignition, the engine runs on for a few seconds. The engine management light then comes on the next time I start the car (in fact because this happens everytime I stop the car, the light is permanently on!) If I stall the car instead of using the key, the light does not illuminate.
I am wondering if this has anything to do with the immobiliser because I notice in the car manual there is a way of setting the imob so that I do not have to enter the code if i unlock the car with the fob within a short timespan. I have tried this setting but it doesn't want to know.
I hope someone may have an idea.
Thanks
Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Bad news I'm afraid. This is a symptom of a failing ESOS electrovalve in the pump. These valves take the place of the stop solenoid and also control timing and fuel delivery under ECU control. The viton tips on the end of them perish and cause them to leak.

What is happening in your case is the ESOS is not sealing off on a stop command and the ECU then does an emergency stop on the pump to bring the engine to a halt. It warns that it has done this by lighting the Engine Management Light. A Lexia diagnosis will confirm.

As for repair, this is not really a DIY job unless yu are very experienced with diesel pumps and you will be at the mercy of a local diesel specialist to replace the ESOS valves. It will not be cheap.

It's a shame this has happened now as I'm soon to receive a duff EPIC pump to see how DIY'able they are. In the meantime it'll be worth having a natter with Mark2.1td as he has recently successfully fitted a Bosch mechanical pump to a 2.1TD. He has posted about it on here.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings Cliff
