Hello All, I have a broken 406 1.9 TD and so have acquired a Xantia 1.9TD.
Both induction manifolds are caked in a heavy oily deposit - nearly half a centimetre thick. I am puzzled! does anyone know if this is normal or is it an indication of a fault? Exhaust gas recirculation? engine damage? I don't understand it because there must be a whole load of gunk going into the head and combustion chambers.
Anyone enlighten me?
Lawrence

Hi Lawrence Good to hear you've gone and got a Xantia!
Let us know more details. I guess you have an Estate.
Now, the gunk you refer to is actually perfectly normal if the engine has EGR (which they do have post '96) and is as you suspect, a direct result of EGR action.
The best thing to do is to diaable EGR by blocking the vacuum to the EGR valve, the thing that looks like a little lantern on the RH end of the exhaust manifold. Lift the pipe from the valve and block it.
Do come and say hello in the Citroen forum where you'll find a very warm welcome I'm sure you have lots of qyuestions if you've never owned a hydraulic Citroen before...
What is the fate of the 406?

Yeah sorry Jim I just meant the engine.....I haven't actually joined the xantia club! yet! I just went for the 1.9TD lump. Everything seems the same apart from the odd brackets and engine mountings!
Fun and games de-armouring the injection pump! it was one with two bolts to drill out and a cunning split pin at the back tucked inside into the full load adjustment screw. I had to use all my cunning to get it out - I wound a screw into and tapped it out.
I need your advice about how to wire up the stop solenoid from the cables I have.....I can see myself scratching my head over that one!

Ahh right 8) Got the wrong end of the stick there Lawrence
You're getting good at pump de-armouring - forum specialist on that topic now
I'll also disable the EGR for you. Don't worry overly about the crud there as a few Italian tune-ups will soon shift it as you'll find it's very soft.

No worries at all, be pleased to help In fact I think I'm free on Sunday and rather fancy a run down to your way again and give the V6 a nice run in the country....Lawrence1973 wrote: I need your advice about how to wire up the stop solenoid from the cables I have.....I can see myself scratching my head over that one!

I've had a check of my diary Lawrence and Sunday is confirmed good How far are you away from starting her up?Lawrence1973 wrote: I reckon I should be around, will drop you an email.
Hope to see you then. Cheers
I'll bring my full electrical kit so we can do a proper job of the stop solenoid...
