Handbrake wire change 205 GTi

Post by Mr. C » 04 Apr 2003, 22:52

Anyone change the handbrake wire on a 205 Gti (´89)? Is it difficult? Anything extraordinary to think about? Please help me out!

Fairly straight foward. You'll need a 30mm socket with a long lever to undo the hub nuts and new ones to put on at the finish.

If I have my facts right the 1.6 GTI had drum brakes at the rear and the 1.9 GTI had disc brakes at the rear.
If you have disc brakes then its a cake walk, you don't even need to take the wheel off, just get up some ramps, unhook the cable at both ends and pull it out.
If you have drums then its a bit more involved, like John says, wheel off, drum off.
Be carefull about going under with a wheel off, make sure its safe.

All the best for the weekend then. Since the brake shoes have to come off, if they haven't been replaced for some time, for the sake of 15 quid or so, it might be an idea to have new ones ready to put on. (You'll need to know whether you have Girling or Bendix!)
