1294cc Simca/Talbot engine in 309

Post by 504GLD »

I'm just wondering would the 309's early 1294cc Talbot engine accept all the Simca Rallye parts pushing it up to 100hp. I don't know if there were any casting mods in the 309 days. My Rancho's 1442cc version engine isn't good, and seeing as there are quite a few cheap 309s around would this be a good swop.

the old simca talbot engine was laid nearly flat with the cylinder head against the bulkhead, the later TU series engines are upright and i believe the 309 engine is upright not leant back

Errr ...

Its not that simple.

PSA models up to & until approx june88 used the early type 1.1/1.4 flat cylinder & sump gearbox layout style with the cylinder head pointing towards the bulkhead.
These engine very often suffers from bad running, as the very simple task of replacing the spark plugs is a small nightmare on these engines ...

Later june88 on 1.0/1.1/1.4/ TU style engines are entirely different, with the common upright layout and end mounted gearbox type MA.
They have one peculiarity in having the exhaust manifold at front of engine bay, contrary to the larger XU engine series.

Neither of these engine types will match the Simca/Talbot style 1.3L "rally" engine also known from the popular 205 rally model series.
This engine is pretty much a stand alone design i PSA aspect.

I kind of forgot about this posting, but actually your confusing the XY series engines from the 104/205/Visa/Samba which had gears in the sump.

Simca 1000, 1100, Rancho, Horizon, Alpine, Solara all had 4cy line with bolt on gearbox, which in 1294cc ended up in the 309 until about 1990. In Spain they used them in early 205s... apparently, something like engine code E1 / G1.
