205 D pump timing

Hi, I've just bought a 93 205XLD. The previous owner had advised that the engine was noisy and emitted lots of smoke . He was right! I think the pump timing's 180 deg out as someone's been in about the engine I can see. Not sure for what reason.

Initially changed injectors which made no difference then it dawned on me about the timing. I know these engines will run 180 deg out we had it in the past with a 305 1.9D. Both cars sound similar ie like a Maestro van and loads of smoke.

On the 305 we were changing the pump due to a diesel leak at the nose of the pump,we misplaced the woodruff key and the timing was out.

Do you think I'm on the right track? How do you re-time the pump as it was so long ago with the 305 that I can't be sure now...
