Do the seats fold down on 405 saloon?

Post by Ed »

As per title please? My bootlid will now not open for some reason, and I want to gain access to the boot via the backseats, but I can't see anyway to get them to fold down.

Pretty sure that the only access to the boot is through the "hatch" where the armrest is, I'm afraid.

You could try taking the rear seat out, but I think there's a metal bulkhead behind (Peugeot I seem to recall noted that the rear seat of the 405 saloon was fixed to retain good handling via torsional rigidity of the bodyshell)...good luck!

Ed,

My Haynes manual tells me if you remove the retaining screw on the plastic "hatch" behind the armrest, you can then grab each side of the rear seat back and lift to release it from it's retaining clips. Unfortunately the manual doesn't show whether the metal behind has any holes in it, or is a solid panel...

If you can get the speakers out that will at least let you see what's in there.

I think you're out of luck. I recently removed the interior trim from the boot and as I recall there's a sheet of metal behind the rear seats that can't be removed. I think there's even metal under the parcel shelf.

If i remember right, there are holes in the steel behind the seats but not big enough for you to get through!

And its clad with carpet so you cant see it that easy if you can take the speakers out( which i think is done from the boot !!!!)

Worth a look tho,its gonna be a bit of a pain to get if you cant get to it any other way.

You might end up busting the lock out to fix it

Good luck

have you tried lowering the spare wheel tray and looked for any service lids in the luggage floor - from underneath that is
- or you could make one yourself right there - it wont spoil the looks in any way !
I seem to recall that many saloons had a service lid behind a foldable license plate holder.
Also the rear light clusters are only accessible from inside ?

There's no service lid on the 405 boot floor I'm afraid. The lights are held in by 4 bolts on the interior, behind plastic trim. I suppose you could hammer out one of the lights and reach inside to open the boot. You can get a replacement light on ebay for £10 or £15.

I'd be surprised if removing the lights left a big enough hole to reach through.
