2.1TD into 205!

Post by jonnydrumm1967 »

Hi, has anyone got any ideas if a 2.1TD will fit in a 205? Saw ace footage of a 205 multi on youtube that had this combo but it had been tuned a bit(!) Seems to go like hell!

I've got a couple of 205s, a GTI and a D turbo but also have an old XM with the above engine, plus its an early one with the mechanical Bosch pump, so no electrics to worry about :D I see the clutch is hydraulic? on the 2.1.

I'll probably never do it,but everything's sitting just outside my window, tempting me....

110BHP and 184 lb/ft in a 205.....

Cheers! Jon.

Hi Jon,

Based on the fact that the more-or-less structurally similar XU10 engine will fit then it should be possible to fit the 2.1TD in a 205. The sticking point may be the width of the head and how far out the back the turbo sticks. On the 8V XU10CTE (Activa) engine, the turbo runs into clearance problems and given that the XUD11 is has a wider 12V head, the problem could be accentuated.

What will not fit is the ML gearbox. It's too wide for the bodyshell but as all XU engines have a common bellhousing bolt pattern you can substitute a BE3 gearbox although you'd have to put a BE3 compaible flywheel and clutch on.

The engine mount will require some alteration.

For more advice visit the 205GTi Drivers Forum and have a search on turbo conversions using the Activa engine.

On the basis that someone (in Holland I think) has managed to squeeze a 2.2HDi in a 205, It seems quite possible to get a 2.1 in there..

Thanks Jim,great info! I didn't know a BE3 would fit a 2.1 but it makes sense now. As you say it's an XU block so it should be easy enough. Might have to relieve the bulkhead a bit,we'll see. Thanks again,

I have seen this done, a 205 at The French Car show had it installed, but I think this was back in 2005.
