My daughter recently bought a 306 without a remote key. Is it possible to use a secondhand plipper from another car to open the central locking and how do you go about making it work.Does it have to be a 306 key or will a 405 with infra red remote be suitable.

I know that the earlier infrared plippers are in-compatible with the later systems : Later systems are not infrared, but HF function.
Pretty sure though that any Citroen/Peugeot plipper of later correct type simply re-programs the car receiver to make it all work.
Yes - its correct : the later types re-programs the in-car receiver by the plipper - not the other way around. So you got to have 2 exactly matching plippers if you want more than one.
The re-programming sequence is rather simple once the ignition key is turned to a special position.
Read about it in the tips & tricks section.
