Intermittent speedo problem

I have a 2000 406 110 HDi which has covered 138k and since I bought it almost 2 years ago it has had a speedo fault where it drops to zero and you get a reduction in power. It is getting progressively worse and it can vary from several seconds to several miles. I have been told that when the speedo drops down, the engine management reduces the fuel to a default setting and then increases the fuel as the speedo kicks in. Can anybody help?

The speedo is done electronically by a sensor on the gearbox, so checking the wiring on that would be the first thing. Maybe change the sensor for a new one
