205 (n/a diesel) suspension clonk!

Post by bxbxbx »

Hi, have an `89 205 diesel n/a diesel 5 door. Suspension clonks over bumps and pot holes, o/s/f seems the worse though it does sometimes seem like each side of the car is doing it almost like it`s the whole side of the car and not just the corners.
It`s been suggested that the drop links are the problem so can someone please explain (in layman`s terms!) what the drop links actually are, what they look like, likely price and availability and a diagram or simple explanation of how to change them and any tools that I might need?
Sorry for all the questions, thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

First check if it has drop links as some base models dont,it connects the lower arm (tca) to the anti roll bar and its an easy job to do,best way to check its them at fault is to simply remove them and go for a drive(short drive!)

Have a look at Gsf's online shop for a price or they might be on ebay also

Its a nice straightforward job,have fun :D

No drop links on a 205D. I'd look at all suspension bushes for play, and don't forget the rear subframe bushes. They commonly wear out and 'clonk'. Good luck

Thanks Ralph, are these doable to a less than competent person such as me? If not are they likely to be an expensive job at a garage? Many thanks,

Rear subframe mounts aren't technically difficult, but you've got to drop the rear suspension beam.
There should be loads on it in the archive, I remember RichardW wrote a load about it when he did a ZX.
Why not book your car in for an MoT test? For about £40 you'd get a full run down on the brakes and suspension, and you can take it from there.
At least then you'd know if the "knock" was serious, and where it was coming from. Better that than guessing and wasting time/money.

Plus, your car might even pass, so that's that job done for another 12 months!
