Pug 406 HDI anti-pollution fault

Post by Pugsulike »

Hi

I have a 2002 Peugeot 2.0 GLX HDI (110) manual. Each time I start the engine, the central display advises that there is an 'Antipollution Fault'. The engine starts, no problem, but it goes into 'limp home' mode. The car is down on power and won't rev above 2800rpm. Makes pulling out onto roundabouts quite interesting sometimes. Other than that, it drives smoothly with no peculiar noises.

In my ignorance, I took the car to my local Peugeot dealer for a diagnostic check. They found faults in the turbo pressure valve solonoid and the air flow meter. Both were replaced and they told me that the fault was now intermittent and therefore was not the turbo itself. They now believe that there may be a short circuit in the wiring loom. They would continue an open ended investigation for me if I agreed to pay them £80 an hour. I didn't fancy paying that on a 'may be' diagnosis.

I gave the garage a £200+ donation - that's what it seems like because the car behaves exactly as it did before they 'repaired' it, and I have seen no evidence of the fault now being intermittent. Unless, of course, my understanding of english differs from theirs!

Has anybody any ideas? Or do you know of any competent auto electrician/mechanic/engineer in the South Essex area who may be able to help? Yellow pages lists a few, but it's a bit of pot luck choosing one.

Incidentally, I contacted Peugeot UK who told me that they couldn't help as they don't have a technical department! Should I get worried?

Thank you.

check for any air leaks on the turbo air circuit, especially around the intercooler.also check all the vaccum pipes going to & from the turbo electrovalve & EGR electrovalves are clear, ideally clear them out with compressed air.

there is technical support but only for dealers ,i would check the vacuum pipe from solenoid valve to turbo wastegate with a mitivac pump, have had quite a few rubber pipes split where it goes onto turbo, hence no vacuum and no turbo.

Checked out the intercooler and vacuum pipes. All seem OK and fault is still present. Renewed air and fuel filters as well. One thing I realised is that the engine management instrument panel warning light never comes on. Not ever. Probably just a bulb gone but could it have any relevance? Anyway, have now booked it in next month to an independant garage that specialises in French motors to see what their diagnostics come up with.

Incidentally, Aircon wasn't up to much either. Had a look at the pollen filter. Absolutely filthy, probably never been replaced. Renewed filter and Aircon is fine now. Is anybody surprised that car has a full Peugeot main dealer service history, last service about 2000 mls ago?

Took my car to The French Carnection in Rayleigh, Essex today. They had the car for about an hour and a half and solved the problem. Seems there were about 4 separate faults, mainly to do with poor connections on sensors and the ECU (the wiring loom itself was OK).

Anyway, car's fine and I'm happy!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
