peugeot 406 hdi engine rattling on acceleration
hi. i have a 2000 406 hdi, when accelerating hard there is a rattling noise coming from the engine (between 2000-3000 rpm) it seems to get quieter as the engine gets warmer, has anyone come across this before? any help would be gladly appreciated thanks.

Do a search on the citroen forum. This problem can be the aux drive pulley or the crank pulley. If you can get access, remove the aux drive belt and see if you still have the problem.

- its the french guy who did a complete strip down of a Bosch rotary diesel pump.
He does not state any text to go with these pictures.
PSA did in fact had some very serious problems with cast iron parts already back in the '80-es. Best known to the public I guess was the porous CX diesel blocks and parts.
Hope not this is a similar parts quality problem on the timing sprockets and belt pulleys.
BTW : can you recognise the engine (and car). It's pretty obvious its a diesel. But what type ? Must be a 2.0 XUD as this is the only one I've heard of with 12valves. And the 2.1 have timing chains ?

The car's a Xantia, and it must be a 2.1 TurboD with the 12V on the air inlet.
BTW do not run the HDi without the belt - it says in big letters on the crank pulley "DO NOT RUN WITHOUT BELT"
The HDis do sometimes appear to rattle between 2 and 3k rpm - it's just a feature of the engine. Can be worse on older engines as the injectors wear, and the pilot injection phase goes a bit awry. I'd check the crank pulley as a priority though....

Its a bit hard keeping up to standards only having BX'es in my stable - and occasionally a visit from a '94 Xantia 1.6. My old CX'es have for long gone to the Citroen heaven ...
You would'nt know where to find some web based tech info on the Lucas-CAV type PDC rotary pump (the type used when Lucas-CAV was fitted on PSA XUD engines) by any chance ?

Well the camshaft pulley along with the pump pulley and many other components found on and around the engine aren't made by casting at all, they are in fact powdered metal components, whereby a mix of metal powders are pressed into a precision die under very high pressure.
The compacted powder retains the form of the die as it is ejected, the component is very brittle at this point and will break easily in this state, so it then undergoes a heat treatment process called sintering, this bonds all the mollecules of the powder together, forming a solid high strength precision component that needs hardly any machining.
The mix of powders used for these pulleys will not be the strongest available in this process, and if the pulley had been a real cast iron one I think the belt would have given way long before the pulley, even though, I think it speaks volumes for the quality of the timing belt when it can exhert the force required to smash even one of these types of pulley.
