A few q's about 405s and engines

Post by caveman_si »

Ive got A few random questions about a 405 glx if any one can help?

Would a 95 M reg 405 glx 1.9 td come with ABS as standard or was it an option? i sure the aircon was standard on this car at this time and i thought ABS was too.

When turning the engine on from cold on this car is the any reason for the water in the radiator to slowly rise ?? Assuming that the water level in the radiator is at most an inch below that cap level and defintley over full and that the level started to rise less then a minute after the car starting and the top radiator hose was still stone cold. (im thinking blown head gaskit or poorly bled coolant change prehaps)

Any reason why the hose from the thermostat to the top of the radiator would split? prehaps related to the above?

And im right in thinking when the air con is turned on in this car the fans automatically come on (or one fan atleast) if the aircon is working?? Assuming the aircon was set to coldest setting and the ambinet air temp was 12°-15° in the heater set on medium.

cheers in advance guys

From August 1994 aircon was standard fit on all but the lowest spec of 405, Thats when they all got drivers airbag, side impact bars, front seatbelt pretensioners & most a ultrasonic alarm.

The MI16 Le-Mans NEVER got any of the safety kit ( In the U.K. at least ) But it did get the ultrasonic alarm & keypad immobiliser a while before the rest of the 405s.

You could delete the aircon when you ordered the car & have the electric sunroof instead if you wanted, Or pay £700 & have BOTH fitted, 99% of people stuck with the aircon.

ABS was NEVER standard fit on the GLX spec of 405, Even the early Executives DIDN'T have standard ABS fitted.

There was a facelift for the GLXs when they gained the MI16 style sports bumpers & 14" 8 spoke GTX style alloys but still no standard ABS.

Later 405 Executives & even later GTXs ( When they also got the 6 disc cd changer ) got ABS, The GTX cars with 14" 5 spoke Harrier alloy wheels are the facelifted ones.

Both cooling fans should run when the aircon is switched on.

Powerlee that answers a couple of questions, i wasnt sure about the abs. but the rest of the car rang bells so i thought i would check, so thats one box i can tick now.

And as for aircon i thought the fans had to some on but again i wouldnt have bet the house on it

Cheers mate

Anyone else any thoughts on the other bits??

The aircon on my gtx petrol cycles the fan on and off every now and again, it's not on 100% of the time.

Oh, and it has a 6cd changer, but doesn't have abs...

My STDT has both a CD changer and ABS, and a sunroof but no aircon.

I have to say, I like the light from the sunroof, but miss the aircon now it's getting warmer....

This is because there is a temperature probe in the evaporator coil that detects when the system gets too cold, and turns it off, preventing evaporator icing.

Unfortunately, with age the sensor goes a bit off, and starts controlling at a higher temperature. Mine controlls at about +8c, which is a bit too warm. If I pull the sensor out, the A/C runs all the time, and I can get -5c at the vents. Nice, but if left like that for very long, the evaporator will become a chunk of ice!
This is not a signature.

Hi all

I had a 405 STdT, on a 1994 L reg. It had sunroof, air con AND ABS fitted, unfortunally the Air con never worked...

Shame.. oh, and no air bag.. That was fitted months later, as said above.

Also no side impact bars, front seatbelt pretensioners, But it would have had an alarm / immobiliser system that can be best discribed as a joke
