306 Dturbo smokes on startup.
Hi,
I have a 1997 R reg 306 D turbo that smokes quite alot on start up (only when its been stood all day or night) and spluuters as well (a bit like a misfire on a petrol engine).
When thew glow plugs were replaced I used none genuine ones as they were cheaper.
Do you think that these might not be giving out a high enough temperature or is it more likely to be something else such as air in the fuel line?
The "misfire" clears after the engine has been running for about 30 secs on a very cold mornings.
Any thoughts/ideas appreciated before I go buying genuine glow plugs.

it does actually stay on post heat untill 60 degrees after the engine has started.pre heat box has coolant temp info to it via 2 pin green sensor on thermostat housing.put a test light on glowplug supply wire and you will see.have been using this set up since facelift 405 with the xud9te in 1992.

Try waiting an extra couple of seconds after the glowplug light goes out. Alternatively, turn the ignition on and off two or three times (waiting for the light to extinguish each time) to give the plugs time to heat up a bit more before you turn it over. If this reduces the problem then you know it's the plugs...pug_owner2002 wrote:Hi,

Thanks everyone for the replys!
I tried what stevieb said and turned the ignition on and off a few times and this improved it.
So a set of genuine plugs it will be.

Not all cars have this setup. My 1993 facelift 405 with XUD9TE doesn't have it, nor did the one I had before this one.pugxpert wrote:it does actually stay on post heat untill 60 degrees after the engine has started.pre heat box has coolant temp info to it via 2 pin green sensor on thermostat housing.put a test light on glowplug supply wire and you will see.have been using this set up since facelift 405 with the xud9te in 1992.
I think it's more often fitted to vehicles with Lucas/Cav injection pumps.
BERU glowplugs are definitely the way to go. They may be expensive, but they work and they last.
The only other problem that there could be with the engine (from the OP) is that it may be a bit down on compression. Running the glowplugs 3 or 4 times seems to compensate for this on a cold start. If you change all the plugs and the starting is no better, then this may be your next port of call.
This is not a signature.
a petrol engine catalyst traps carbon monoxide and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide.a diesel engine cat helps reduce nitrious oxides by raising tempretures in catalyst and other harmul gases if a cat is fitted it will probbably have egr as well.if you remove a petrol catalyst it would fail the mot emmisions test,if you remove a diesel one it will still pass the smoke test
