Peugeot 405 Lower ball joint

Post by David Humphrey »

I've noticed some movement in the joint at the bottem of the hub carrier. Please can anyone advise how to replace this.Is it possible to compress spring and take off without disturbing driveshaft.Do you need the special tool to unscrew the joint?
Thankyou
David

Hi

The joint unscrews from the hub carrier with the special tool, You might get it out without the tool but I wouldnt bother trying.

Also the ball joint was modified from VIN number ending 71358280 which I think was some time in 1994.

Ive never done one myself & im surprised you need to change one, Are you sure its not the wishbone bush gone?

ThanksPwerlee.
As far as i can make out the play is in the lower ball joint. When you say wishbone do you mean the inboard bushes ?
Thanks

Hi

Yes, The inboard bushes on the wishbone normally go before the balljoint does

Hi,if it is the ball joint best bet is to hire the tool or buy one,i have changed mine before for the mot as it looked like it was going to fall out  Make sure you punch out the locking tabs that hold it to the hub bottom then fit the tool,if its not too tight you might be able to do it on the car by undoing the bottom arm but you will need an assistant to hold the hub while you turn the tool.If its too tight you might have to remove the hub and hold it in a vice :o Good luck! ps,tool looks like this-http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/tools/in ... _sx027.htm[/url]
