306 HDI starting

Post by saxocar »

Neighbour has an N reg, 306 HDI which is difficult to start, but once started runs normally. A garage has checked the glow plugs battery etc (not sure what the etc is exactly) and can find nothing wrong. Suggests the pump and estimates £600 fitted. Question is can it run normally if the pump is faulty?

Hi

Are you sure its a HDI, An N reg 306 should have the XUD9 or XUD9TE lump under the bonnet.

Sounds very much like an air-leak into the fuel system, and that the Garage is either completely inept, or going for a fairly good rip-off. Nothing new there then.

Check fuel lines (including leak-off pipes) for splits, cracks, loose connections etc.

Try pumping the fuel primer before starting the car. If the starting is improved, you have your problem.
