1.8 litre 405

Post by stevieb »

Right, it's looking increasingly likely that I'm going to give up trying to keep my current 405 on the road (see other post).

So, I have a plan which I may use. I have seen a nice 1.8 litre petrol 405 on offer. Same year as mine (N-plate), and only 85,000 miles.

I could salvage anything re-usable from my current one and transfer to the new one (alloys with good tyres etc), before sending the old one off to the great Peugeot graveyard. But is there anything important/expensive worth transferring? Anybody want to fire some suggestions at me?

My knowledge of the 1.8 powerplant is limited - I owned an old 1.6 a long time ago - so I'm not sure whether anything is cross-transferable. Can I transfer over my K & N Highflow airfilter? Is it the same housing?

Is the '96 1.8 unit the 8-valve or 16-valve job?

Anything else I need to watch out for with this engine? I know all the pitfalls with the remainder of the car, but the 1.8 engine is a complete mystery to me.

Over to you chaps.

Hi

The 1.8 in the 405 is the 8 valve lump XU7JP

The parts cd rom shows the same airfilter listed for the facelifted 405 1.6 & 1.8 engines.

The engine is the good old XU lump, Look for oil leaks & that the cambelt has been changed on time.

If it was me I would keep the airbag & control unit, seatbelt pretensioners, The main ECU control relay under the bonnet mounted on the slam panel, The heater blower motor, lights, switches, ABS brain if fitted etc etc.

Try & keep as many bits as you can & have room in the loft for them.
