306 tu3 1.4i engine leaking oil in corner

Post by Niek »

Hello all,

I think this is a very common problem on these engines. They start to leak oil from the HG at the front right corner. Dribling down the block causing a mess and potentially bad for the cambelt.
I'm going to change the HG and am wondering whether you always have to skim the head, this car hasn't overheated causing the HG to go.
It would save me alot of time not to...
Any ideas?

Cheers,
Niek

To get a good seal for the new head gasket on an aluminium head without skimming is very hard indeed. On the iron block you can simply use a blunt chisel and clean it up quite well without too much worry of damaging the surface, but the aluminium is very hard to clean up to a good standard.

Personally, I would get it lightly skimmed (maybe just 0.03mm to 0.05mm removed) to be sure that you don't cause the head gasket to fail 5000 miles later.

Or not worry about the oil leaking. Is it actually getting on to the cam belt? or just dribbling past it?
This is not a signature.

Haven't actually checked the cambelt  . But everywhere it parks it leaves a stain about 10 x 10 cm within 20 minutes!
It's getting to be a pretty bad leak.

I'll get it skimmed. Thanks
