406 fuel computer accuracy ?

Post by joyful »

I am interested to hear how this works. Does it monitor fuel flow directly in the pipe or use mph and other formulas to work out the data.
How reliable is it for showing MPG and distance to pumps.
So far with a V reg petrol 2.0 estate I am showing 38.2 mpg after 2200 miles. Is this true?

Depends on the type of driving you do and driving style. I've just checked mine and averaged 37.2 for the last 5000 miles or so. I don't think thats bad for a petrol engined barge like a 406 estate but I bet that would be radically different if I had to commute into a city every rush hour.
I generally fill up roughly every 500 miles and never run it right empty. Going by the 15 gallon tank I'd say that was pretty accurate but gawd knows how it works it out.
I've never been brave enough to go to my last couple of miles on the distance to pumps thing but think the fuel light comes on when there is roughly one gallon left.

Well I did manage to run out of fuel. The miles to go went down to 25 and then stopped registering. Fuel ran out about 20 or 30 miles later.
I am still interested to know on how the fuel computer works.
