205 Clutch or CV joint knock???

Post by raytriplej » 29 Sep 2002, 04:54

Hello there, today I bought a 5 door, 205 Diesel, 83,000 Miles. It was advertised as two lady owners, but unfortunately the last lady owner was a bit rough with the gearbox (I found this out when she took me for a test drive).
The engine is fine, but when you release the clutch pedal (ie take your foot off), there is a slight clunk when leaving in first and changing into second. Third, fourth, and fifth seem ok but maybe I just can't hear it. Fifth is quiet when being gentle on the throttle but the engine growls a bit when you step on it. I think that might be normal though.
I am thinking along the lines of a clutch or CV joint making the noise but if anyone out there knows more about these things please let me know.
Thanks in advance,
Ray

Haven't had time to check it yet, I think I will need the book on it to identify where it actually is!

205 Clutch or CV joint knock???

Post by StuartR » 11 Oct 2002, 17:31

Hello there ray, my 205 D 125k miles is rough on the clutch too.
I've considered changing it but am waiting till i'm rich. It's ok if you're very slow with the foot on clutch take up.
when you get a book try adjusting the clutch cable. Tighten it up so the clutch peddle is higher up, my one is maybe half inch higher than brake. May help.
Select 'show all posts' in box at top right corner of screen and look for my question on clutch gearbox problem some time ago. Better advise than I can give there about how it could be release bearings on clutch.
my problem is mainly changing down to first, say at junctions, from higher gear 2nd to 1st is very stiff but a bit of a swing at it does the trick.
----
also when starting off (1st gear) make sure your left heal is firmly on the floor and maybe abit closer to clutch peddle. Its had to explain and sounds obvious but this does make it easier for me to get the bite point very smooth. Its harder to control if you use the tip of you foot as you would do if you had a softer clutch pedal action.

205 Clutch or CV joint knock???

Thanks Stuart,
I have got similar symptoms to what you are describing for my clutch. I will try adjusting it when my workshop manual arrives.
Also I have discovered my knocking noise is a buggared CV joint. I am not too sure how difficult these are to change but I will order two new driveshafts and either fit them or get them fitted.
Cheers,
Ray

205 Clutch or CV joint knock???

My mechanic changed my driveshafts and now my noise has gone. It is still difficult to change 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st when cold but I have spoken to another 205D owner and he has the same problem. Them problem goes away when everything has warmed up.
Cheers,
Ray

Just read this (as no net access)
saving on aol to pay for that new clutch!
glad its ok now but can't say I've noticed that gear changes are better with the box warmed up? Will look out for that.
By the way read a reveiw on 307 other day which mentioned 'peugeots usual notchy gear shift' so maybe ongoing problems there!

Hi as the gearchange seems to improve when the gearbox is hot it might be worth investing in some "slick 50" gearbox treatment,it certainly helped in my case. maybe the gearbox is due for an oil change any way, unlike engines gearboxes tend to get neglected in the oil change department!
good luck
