Driveshaft clapped??

Driveshaft clapped??

I drove my 405 diesel today and stopped as it SOUNDED like I had a puncture, but the tyres were OK.
I tested turning tightly in a car park ,and on left turns there was loadish clicking.
This SUGGESTS the right hand shaft needs replacing.
Before I shell out to have repaired, does anyone have OTHER cheaper things to check first please?

Hi
Check the intermediate bearing in the lower engine mount, The right hand drive shaft passes through this & a worn bearing or housing will give you all sorts of nasty noises.

Is the intermediate bearing replaceable, or is it part of the shaft?
......and how is it checked please?

It's replaceable - but - you need a very long puller to shift it. By the time you've found one and faffed about, it's easier to get an exchange.

On my 306 1.8 XS when turing to the right slighty I get a small grating vibration/sound felt through s/wheel? Someone has mentioned driveshaft to me but not sure, any ideas?

The info I have is to go into a clear area e.g. car park and turn tight circles.
If clicking occurs on left turns the RHS drive shaft is at fault.
If clicking occurs on right turns the LHS drive shaft is at fault.
Limited info but hope that helps!

Not necesarrily. I've changed 2 now with nothing more than 2 hammers.
By placing the driveshaft vertically in a vice, and hitting the outer race of the bearing on both sides at the same time with medium weight hammers, the bearing drops straight off. I know hitting a bearing with a hammer is not good news, but this is the old one, so we don't care about it.
Fitting the new one simply requires a length of steel tube which is a snug fit over the driveshaft, to bear on the inner race of the new bearing.
Getting the shaft out in the first place though.... That's the challenge. If I find one more with an intermediate bearing corroded into it's aluminium carrier!!!! Grrr. [:(!][:(!]
