405 heater fan only works on max.

Post by dvhttn »

Hi,
Heater fan on my 405 (pre-facelift) diesel turbo only works on max. I am getting hot and cold air so it's just the fan. Searching the archives the only vaugly similar problem was on a 405 TD. The advice was change the fan. Checking the Haynes manual these are fairly easy to get at (sounds like the same as my old 205) and also have a motor control pack on them. Is this likely to be the cause of the problem?
There were also threads that talked of a resistor pack under the bonnet somewhere. But found no reference to these in the Haynes manual.
Basically, any advice appreciated .....
Thanks

Hi
It will be the resistor pack that is attached to the blower motor, It has shorted to earth.
Either fix this quickly or unplug the motor, If you leave it the relay for the blower fan gets too hot & starts to melt the wiring loom behind the plug!
Pop down the scrapyard & search out any 405s, 306, 406, 605 etc for a decent motor.
Also check out the Citroens too.
Leave the Saxos & 106s, The motor is different & wont fit.
The heater motor is under the glove box, Behind that carpet trim.
Make sure the key ISNT in the ignition!
Remove the 2 x metal spring clips holding the trim ( Dont lose or damage them, Peugeot / Citroen NO longer stock them! )
The heater motor is right in front of you, Undo the 3 or 4 screws depending on motor, Unplug the brown connector plug & unclip the loom from the motors body.
The motor should now drop down.
WARNING: The motor will RUN whenever the ignition key is turned on, EVEN if the blower setting is OFF! This is to get airflow thorugh the car.

Hi,
Ta for that Lee. Seen a similar post from you before but wasn't sure if it was the same problem I had. I'll definitely unplug the motor. Peugeot want 150 squid + vat (ish) for a new one .... the scrappies will get a visit at the weekend.
Oh, or are the resistor packs repairable?? We have a Maplins in Reading ...
Just a thought .....
Cheers!

the resistors etc are normally sealed.not worth messing about with.a second hand motor is your best bet!

Well, I did take the motor apart and *take a look* but I failed electrical engineering - mechanical was me...... So, off to the scrappies at lunchtime and a much newer motor from a 406 was secured for 20 squid. Works a treat .....
Cheers for all the help ....

Glad it was a easy & simple fix mate.
I have a spare motor in stock already for my 405 in my spares cupboard, The pile is growing, lol
