GLX?

Post by Gotta New Pug »

What does the GLX letters stand for on Peugeot cars? May sound daft for asking [:o)] but me and wife have been having a bet on who gets closest!
Cheers

Well... over the years(forgive me if I get this wrong) Peugeot have been playing around with letters like nobodies business.
The 1980s to late 90s system was -
G** - 4/5 Door
X** - 3 Door (excluding 106)
*N* - Normal (basic trim)
*E* - Economy Trim
*L* - Basic trim
*R* - Better trim!!
*T* - Sports trim (Turismo!)
*A* - Van trim
**D - Diesel
**X - Xtra equipment
**I - Petrol Injection
***T - Turbo
SR* - *T* level of performance, with slightly better *R* level of trim I think.
so GLX, is 4/5 door, Basic Trim with extra equipment. I'm sure there are real french names to all of these, but I just remember as those!
examples - XLD, 3 door basic trim, diesel. GE - 4/5 door, economy trim, (as there is no third letter its petrol).
The only exception to this was GTI, which was always 3 door, and Ti which was always 4 door!
Then on some cars there will be "Injection" or "Dturbo" slapped on the end instead e.g. GTDT will be GTDturbo, a GTD despite having "TD" in the letters isn't turbo diesel.
The first 106s were e.g. XND, X not meaning 3 door, as it was both 3 and 5 door.
And when you are totally confused out of your mind the special editions start.....
Then Peugeot changed the whole lot to look like Ford, so along comes L, LX, etc etc.
I think.... confused, I am!

Peugeot changed from XL XT etc around 1998, L thus became the basic version, LX midrange and GLX had all the toys. Then you had XSi/DTurbo/GTi etc which were simply the sporty versions with GLX type spec.
Edit: Even the 5 door 306s from 1993 were X designation (as opposed to G), They dont stand for anything apart from the trim level. I did have a cut out from a mag somehwere describing them, but its basically what I said above!

I might be wrong, but I thought L on cars was "Luxe", GL "Grande Luxe" and then GLX would be that but a bit better!

GLX was in both the old 80s category and the new late 90s one, so the trim on a 309GLX isn't the same level of 406GLX. I recall 309s even got the badge "Special Equipment" also stuck on the boot.

The kit on some later pugs seems mad, like my 406 lx which has alloys and leccy rear windows, when i've seenGLXs the same age with steelies and winders. Odd.

The early N & P reg 406 GLXs has steel wheels fitted, But they all had electric rear windows from the factory.

I think out of all the Pugs I can recall the 205 had the longest list of all model variations and editions?

My 406 LX is a facelift 99V. The dark blue facelift GLX on a V I sometimes see at work has steelies, though i've never looked inside. It has front fogs though, and mine doesn't. Seems odd that some supposedly higher spec cars (but not all) lack kit that my humble LX has.

Yes but your LX could have had a lot of optional extras, like alloys!

I thought that, but it also has the leckie rear windows and is the only LX series 2 i've seen with them. Other than the front fogs (which I don't care about) it's a GLX, so why (if that was the case) did someone pay to spec an LX like that instead of paying a few hundred more and getting a GLX? Just seems a bizzre thing to do?

In the 80-90's the 309 badging was E = 1100 L = 1300 R = 1600 and X 1900 petrol. X = 3 door and G = 5 door, for example
GE 1100 5 Door
GL 1300 5 Door
This formula is common to all models from that time, with the larger engines carrying improved spec. The run out models, GLx and so on were only produced for a short period of time.
