Water Temp - GTi6

Post by matt_gti6 »

Hi,
Got a GTi-6 and recently the water temp has been up and down like a fiddlers elbow. It's OK when normal driving, but if stuck in traffic the temp rises to well over 110 degrees before the fan cuts in.
I am thinking 1 of 2 things, either possible head gasket on the way out (arrghh!) or thermostat needs replacing. You can guess which I am hoping for...
Anyone heard of this happening before?

Ever thought about replacing the rad fan thermo-switch?

Could well be a faulty thermoswitch. I have just changed mine on a 306 xtdt and the part is cheap and its an easy job.It is located on the far right top corner (as you look at the engine from the front of the car) of the radiator.
Just be sure to bleed the system afterwards as you do introduce a fair bit of air into the radiator.

Usually, it kicks in about 100 degrees but when in traffic the temp rises to about 110 degrees

My turbo diesel rad fan kicks in at 95C (single speed fan).
I changed both thermostat and rad fan switch together. Neither was particularly a problem, just thought 11 years was about time for a new pair.
Some of the later 306's (and those with AC) have two speed fans, which cut in at half speed and then full speed. Maybe your low speed thermo isnt cutting in?

Does your 306 have only the one rad fan Solara? I thought they all had two.
My 1997 (mark I) 306 has two fans, but only one comes in at high speed when the temp gets to 97. I think they should both cut in at low speed at 95 ish however so it looks like it needs to be investigated...
BTW the thermoswitch i replaced had the temps at which it cuts in stamped on it - 92.5 and 97.5. so mine is still cutting in a bit late.

Maybe I should look at changing mine then, seen as I do a lot of M25 driving!
