406 Idle Adjustment

Post by Gotta New Pug »

OK, been told my idle speed might be set slightly too high, but how do I bring it down slightly? Had my head under bonnet earlier but couldn`t see anything that could be adjusted. Car is a 2.0 16v petrol GLX saloon.
Cheers in advance for any help!

Bosch Motronic MP5.1.1 is the system your 406 is running.
The idle speed is controled by the ECU & cant be adjusted without diagnostic equipment.
Your Steeper motor on the idle control valve might want cleaning out, Also give the idle control valve & throttle butterfly a good clean.
WD40 is very good & doesnt damage the engine.
Have a search for it using the SEARCH button at the top.
NOTE: You MUST re-set the stepper motor position after cleaning it for the ECU to learn the correct resting position.

OK, searched for stepper motor info above, but only found a brief description to where it should be situated - at the front right of the engine and looks like a little 1 1/2" black box with lead connected to it, - I cant find it in my engine! I may sound stupid for asking but could anyone describe it and its location a little more clearly please as these modern engines are a nightmare for us that only had old bangers in the past!
Thanks for the info above and any further help!

Hi
Heres a picture of the Steeper motor on my 405 with the XU10J2 engine.

You have the XU10J4 engine on your 406, The set up on the throttle housing is very similar.
