406 TD Water Leak

Post by fatbugger »

Hi All
I have a 1996 406 1.9td. The top heater hose has an air vent? in the shape of a square block with a dust cap. It appears to have two moulded hoses permanently attached and a removeable hose and clip at the front. For some reason I cannot get the cap on top of the vent to seal the coolant in for more than a couple of days. Have replaced cap 4 times now but within a couple of days it is either leaking again down threads that cap screws on to or in one case has split the cap in two.
Is there supposed to be a valve in this vent? If you take the cap off there just seems to be a hole straight down into the inside of the vent block.
Hope someone can help costing me a fortune in antifreeze.

I think what you are talking about is the heater matix bleed screw, which is used to get all the air from the heater when the coolant is changed.
If it is leaking (i had one go earlier this year) then the best thing to do is to replace the bleed screw with either a new part of the same type, or get hold of a brass allen key type bleed screw and replace it.
