I sussed th problem with the 306!!!!
it turns out the immobiliser/stop solenoid was stuck, after checking the timing (again) and giving the pump a clout on the cover for the immobiliser with a sizeable chapping stick, it freed itself, and then it went. Wahey!!!!!
