dead 306

Post by martyb2 »

I got a 306td that needed an engine change cos the previous owner blew a big hole in the back of the block, and changed the engine, now the damned thing wont start. Does anyone know if it has an immobiliser fitted to the pump. Car is a 1996 new style 306, has a plip type key, and it has a lucas pump with a blue plug and a black plug on it. I had to change the pump, and i have checked the valve timing etc about 5 times and it seems to be ok. Any advice is aprreciated. Thanks in advance

You can always run a direct positive feed to the stop solenoid to find out. This will eliminate the effect of any immobiliser that might be fitted.

cant find anything that resembles a stop solenoid on it. the blue plug has 3 wires on it, and the black plug has four wires on it. one is green, one is green and yellow, one is white and the other is red.
as far as i can work out the green ones are earth, the red is live, and i dont know what the white one is.

The red wire is likely but the stop solenoid is usually removable - should resemble a radiatior fan switch/reversing light switch somewhat. If you can remove it you can take the plunger out. Are your glowplugs heating up?

glowplugs are heating up, and switching off, but i have been told that there is a chip in the pump, rather than an old type stop solenoid, and i think i need to know how to deactivate it

Bummer - loosen off an injector pipe and see if fuel is flowing.

its getting fuel to the pump, but not pumping it, which is why i think that the stop solenoid is controlled by this chip rather than being able to feed a live straight to it

Black four pin plug is the immobiliser plug, the reason you can't see the stop solenoid is that it is hidden under a steel cover, which is held on by shear head bolts for security.

Bit confused by opening post - did you change the engine or did you take over a car which would not start? If you changed the engine have you got the original injector pump?

I changed the engine and put the original pump and everything else onto the replacement engine, and it wont go[xx(], it turns over off the key, but wont fire, I assume this is because the pump is set to immobilise

The immobiliser is activated by either a transponder in the ignition key for later cars, or a keypad on early ones so if you have a keypad you need the start code from the previous owner to continue using it.

it doesnt have a keypad as it is the 96> model, but it has been sitting for about 5 months with a flat battery.

2 things, first is the PMH number correct on the pump? The pump timing could be well and truly out. If the pump timing is correct then best thing to do is listen to the top right of the pump, above where injector pipes come off as someone turns the key. You should be able to hear the solenoid click. If it doesnt then I would say the immobiliser is stuck on. You can grind the steel cover off, take the solenoid out and replace with a standard solenoid off another lucas pump, or one from gsf, hard wire it to a live when ignition on wire. That will resolve any immobiliser issues. If it still doesnt start then the pump is probably well out. Any diesel pump specialist can set it for you easily enough, not too difficult a job.

it is the original pump from the car. the pump timing and valve timing all seem to be correct, I checked them both about 5 times, but with it sitting for so long, i thought it could be possible that the rubber part of the plunger inside the solenoid could be stuck. When I checked the timing, I set both engines up to exactly the same marks, and then swapped the pump. I did note that the studs were in a different position with the bosch pump than the lucas pump, so i changed them to the same position for the lucas pump from the original engine
