Post by Daniel B »

How does it manage that then, is it a totally different unit to the 2.0Hdi in the Xsara/Xantia?

Its the 'new' 16 valve HDI that the 407 has.
Seems to me that it is related to the 'old' HDI....

Very interesting - quite a healthy power gain over the original unit.

Yes it is, but it doesn't have the same power that VW and BMW are able to get from their 2.0 litre diesels. BMWs 2.0 is best in class and it will be very difficult for anybody to match let alone beat it.
I've got a 1.9 TD, can't wait until the 16v HDI becomes affordable.

Apart from that new twin turbo diesel from the GM stable, doesnt that have about 200bhp? What a monster of an oil burner.[}:)]

VW group have had 150bhp diesels for quite a few years now in the golfs etc. You can get a 160bhp Seat Ibiza TD as well these days and no doubt that engines in golfs as well

Just think back to the days when Pugs & some fords had the 2.3d.65 odd bhp.Now,1.4/1.5d have more than that.Hdi 1.4,70/90 bhp.Just goes to show Diesels are catching up in the power race.Bmw have a new version of their 3.0d in the 5 series.Badged a 535d,its the same 3.0 d engine, but with 275 ish bhp.Thats the same as some of these jap "super cars"

Doesn't HonestJohn say that VW TDI engines tend to fail not too far into 6 figure mileages? That and they aren't as refined as HDI's.
I'd take the HDI slighly worse consumption and lower power output for long life and refinement.

I had an Audi A4TDI (115hp) as a company car for a couple of years - very good performance for the capacity and good fuel economy. also long service intervals. BUT, the service workshops were TERRIBLE. And the service charges expensive. And one liter of the special long life Shell Helix engine oil cost as much as a complete oil change on my XM! Plus the cambelt change necessitated removing the front, the radiator and the A/C - expensive - good job it was a company car! then there was the trouble with the front suspension lower arms (whole unit replaced TWICE, both sides) door trims fell off, injection pump blew a gasket.
If you check out a lot of the second hand VAG diesels you will see "new engine fitted" "new head fitted" on any that have gone a longer distance. So unless someone else is paying for the repairs, I'll stick to PSA diesels in the future.

VAG have slipped well down in the reliability ratings in recent years, as have German cars in general. In the UK people still think German car = rock solid reliability & build quality, and this is reflected in low depreciation, but this image doesn't seem to be based on fact anymore.
