Veggie oil in the winter

Post by rpaco »

I am running my Xantia 1.9 TD on V100 Modified waste veggie oil.
Has anyone run on this during the winter?
I was alarmed when I put a small bottle of it in the freezer and it went solid.
Obviously the Xantia has a heated filter but if it goes solid in the pipe (or tank) on the way, it aint gonna work in the freezing wastes of South Lincs, this winter.
I have tried adding more Turps substitute, but this will become uneconomic, at the moment it works out at 70p/litre including the extra turps subs.
Has any one any experience of usung the above fuel in the winter and at what temeratures etc and what happened? Has anyone killed a pump?

Have you tried adding meths to it or is that just as expensive?

Not been following the vegie oil discussions on here as I dont run a diesel but curious, is it legal to run your car on it? I guess so as the oil is taxed etc in the shops. Does it make any difference to the performance. I suspect it smells a bit different? :) what about economy

No it's not legal unless you register wiht HMCE and pay the duty. OR you buy V100 from a registered bio-power producer who has laready paid the duty and tax.

A freezer is about minus 25C. The last Britsh winter for that temp must have been way back in the last centuary. I've done a check with my freezer at home and it's close to the above figure. You'll never get the Xantia tank down to sort of cold.

Do bear in mind that a freezer is a lot colder than weather we’re likely to get in the UK – just had a look at the thermometer in mine & its running at about -28 C

weird, coming back from watching a day of motorsport at Lydden Hill circuit in Kent on saturday, I was playing with an M3 for about 20 miles along the Brenzett roads and the Rye marshes, he eventually lost me by Winchelsea :)
