Buying a HDI

Hi guys,
With my 93 SX about to give up, I'm thinking of a 00 Xantia HDI with 100K miles, ( havent seen the car yet). Full service history with a main dealer, salesman told me it needs timing belt and spheres, what else may be ready to go on it ?. I've looked through the posts and it mentions clutch problems and fuel pump. Its listed at approx £3700stg. What do ye think.

It looks a little dear to me but I am not aware of Irish car pricing. Bearing in mind that spheres and a cam belt at a Citroen Dealership is about a grand's worth of work Add in a clutch job in the next year maybe and it looks like the dealer would have trouble shifting it. He doesn't know that you can do the work so don't subsidise him! I'd try my luck at £3000 and keep looking.

It's expensive is what it is.
In the UK, I reckon that car should cost approx £3000, and cars are supposedly cheaper in Ireland...

Frankly winter is coming. There are lots of secondhand grotty Xantias around.. and they aint moving.
You have 3 choices as I see it:
1. discount and DIY
2. discount and pay
3. Gargae does work and no discount.
Personally I'd aim for 3 and a warranty.. BUT very expensivce price...see Autrader ad below

In Ireland the dealers are looking for between €8000 and €10000
for 00 HDIs with < 80K miles on them. ( £5K - £6.5K stg ) and between 5K and 8K for 98/99 TDs. It seems that over 80K they want to get them out of the place. Really the question is, is the HDI a better buy than a TD of equivalent mileage.

Would it not be worth making a journey over here then and saving yourself a wedge of wonga? Sure it wouldnt cost you that much to get it registered in Ireland and everything would it. I suppose its extra hassle.

I think HDIs are better than the TDs, they're quieter, the HDI 110 is more powerful than the 1.9 TD and uses less fuel than it too, they also produce more torque lower down in the rev range.
If you're comparing an HDI 110 to a 2.1TD you'll start an argument on here about which is better, personally I'd go for the HDI 110 over the 1.9TD or 2.1TD....

hi,all dealers are crooks didnt you know that!!!!!!car is too much,he is being honest but why dont he do it ..i'll tell you why cos as in earlier replys its going to cost at least a grand.they are going for £1500 on ebay but as usual ..buyer beware.

hdi vs TD?
Depends on mileage and purchase.
You can buy a good usable 97 TD for say £1750
Or a HDI for £3500plus
The difference in mpg is around 42 to 50 - 20% better.
With fuel at around £4 per gallon on 10k miles you would use 50gallons less with a HDI- £200
Insurance on a HDI is group 13 vs 9 - say £50 more
And depreciation: over 5 years on TD is £350 versus a HDI over 7 of £500..
So fuel saving ... +£200
Insurance -£50
Depreciation -£150
Break even.
On spares you would have more to repair on an older TD but more cheaper spares..
So it all come sdown to what you want and how much you can afford.
Rough and ready calcs I was doing.. conccluded better to buy a TD///

Kowalski is right! Forget the TD's (2.1, 1.9). Vibrations, noise, fuel economy, etc. - the HDi 110 is much better. Also forget the HDi 90.
Go for year 2000 or more recent models.
Extras made a lot of difference on the price of the car new. My Xantia HDi price was 27.500Eur base + 5.000Eur extras = 32.500Eur.
Leather, rain sensors, alarm, CD box, automatic air conditioning, parking sensors, electric seats, etc.
So, consider the extras when evaluating the price, especialy the extras that are important for you.

Would disagree with "discount the 90" - Cheaper parts, similar fuel economy and you can always chip it to bring it upto 110 if you really feel you need it (the 90 is the equiv of the 1.9TD).
My HDi (90) 2000 Xantia cost me £3500 in July froma CItroen main dealer (ok been a right royal pain in th eras trying to get the steering wheel radio controls fixed by dealer - but otherwise no qualms) 38000 warrantied miles, FCSH too.
DONT pay the price your dealer wants, offer him £2800 cash and fix the other bits yourself. (Just make sure air con blows COLD)[:)]

If you like driving diesels go for a 1.9 or 2.1td BUT if you like to drive petrol cars then go for a 110 hdi.
It's closer to a petrol engine in performance, smoothness and quiet plus the added bonus less fuel consumption

Cambelt ? Doesn't the service book say it should be done at 80k? If so main dealer service should have doen it and you would have another 60ks worth of cambelt to go. If not, tell him you ain't having without it done - for same price!
Spheres? How can he sell it without good spheres? Tell him to do them - it will cost him peanuts or insist on a 3/6 month guarantee and get them done on that if they need it.

timing belt due at 100,000 miles on 2.0 HDi engines.
martyhopkirk - i dont realy think that parts are any cheaper on the 90 bhp models,most of the parts are the same.

Even so, BrianM says car has done 100k - so why is dealer selling it without cambelt done? By the way, wife's Xantia 110HDi cambelt was done for £130 as part of 72k service by a local independent.
