Common problem on an electric window.
Most likely the whole mechanism has tilted a bit because of loose mountings, then the window binds on up, and the motor struggles, even having the drive gear to slip (grinding), finally cutting out on thermo fuse.
As a first treatment you may try lubricate the window guides with silicone.
But most likely you will have to strip the door to correct the problem.

I have stripped the door and taken out the regulator/motor. it doesn't appear to be a servicable item, do i have to replace it with a new one or one from a scrapyard, i suspect the drive gear has some stripped teeth.

I have also tried the motor/regulator without the window and oiled the cable and window slides. when i operate the motor the winder goes all the way to the top but then makes a grinding noise and doesn't stop until i press the window switch again. the motor also seems to get warm.

Right -
Then you have a problem in the one-touch electronics control circuit. It should sense that the motor current raises when the motor is struggling, and then shut off the motor.
If you dont have one-touch electronic system, then it's simply the switch that tends to stick on the motor current. In that case simply try swap the switch from other window and see if fault moves.

My best bet is to replace it [:)]
AFAIR this is only fitted to the drivers door, so it's breakers time ...

I had a motor strip teeth from its gearbox.
When its stripped off some teeth, instead of stopping when it reaches the top, it slips, so the electronics can't detect the fact that it has reached the top, and thus can't stop it.
Only solution is a new motor since they are all captive....

Yes, Kowalski, that makes a lot of sense. I'd certainly change the motor assembly before suspecting the one-touch switch.

Hi can I piggy back a related question. When I was ebay cit parts someone was selling some little clips that fit into the lock push button and he said that when you take the door card off then the button drops down and these clips are one time use only so you wont be able to lock your door without replacing them. They were 99p ea on his site and he said cit only do them in tens. Sounded like a camel straw to me because I need to fix my o/s window but don't want to get into the hassle of changing these clips etc; Anyone comment???

I've had one off and back on 3 times.
They are removeable without becoming damaged and are fiddly to get back on in the right place (by fiddly I many attempts and some swearing are required)

Paulxmski, the button is easy to replace, if you look at the front of the button you will see 2 small holes, slide the small clip down to the bottom hole, get in the car and lock the door,so the rod goes down, push the button into its slide and press. the button will then be in the right place
