BX register

Post by tomsheppard »

DLM and I have two each, Bernie has three, Oily and Vanny have specials, Jeremy and Alans have at least one and BX bodger probably has one.
Jon and PRM have one apiece.
That's fourteen so far.
Just how many are there on this forum? I suspect that there are more about than we realise.
People seem to be cottoning on. The £50 ebayer is now a thing of the past, £3-400 being asked, and I've seen one at £750!
Could Jon be right about the renaissance?

I have one 16V, Adrian and his Dad have one each - there's a whole raft of us on the 16V board, quite a few 16V owners have a second BX I believe.

Mines a poverty spec. RD17 diesel: I would have a few more as they will probably never be as cheap or available again but i'm a bit short of storage space at the moment!
They are still being abandoned at the side of the road though....

Ok Tom, you sound like just the person to set up the BX Register! I I said before, Practical Classics at least now list the GTi in their "klassic" valuations!

Tom - great idea!
I actually have 2, my megamileage DTR Turbo estate and a 16 valve which awaits attention.
What really is needed is some interest and acceptance by enthusiasts that the BX in all its guises is a sensible and interesting car for them. I suppose publicity is what is needed - perhaps we should have a gathering of some vehicles and see about putting together an article with some photos?

See below [;)] I'd show a photograph if I knew how, copy and paste doesn't seem to work.
Anyone?

Publicity is a great idea. Maybe I'll write something up for one of the classic car mags
and advise potential owners of the breadth of help and knowledge on this forum.
As for a gathering, yes, count me in.

Hey,
Got one too (see sig). Over here they are still bought and thought of as cheap second cars. They are perfect for that being easy to maintain and sturdy...

I have an '88 19GTi. It's 16 1/2 years old and has done just a bit over 70,000 miles - I know this is genuine as I've had it from new.
It's basically in everyday use, essentially it's been the Wife's motor for the last 10 years and is used almost exclusively around town. However, I'm trying to use it much more now - to save wear on my (much) newer other car!
Even though the ride is quite harsh (new spheres needed, really) and there are a lot of annoying squeaks & rattles, I still enjoy driving it - mostly the sheer oomph of that excellent 8v GTi engine.
I'm quite interested in how many GTis are still on the road, the feel I get from this forum is that the vast majority of BXs still in service in the UK are Diesels, but I'd still like to know.
Jim.

Jonathan... you need to use a web photo hosting service first, my advice would be photobucket or tinypic (http://tinypic.com/)
You then need to use the forum code tag to insert a pic into your post (like my two at teh bottom here) - thets the [img src= ] rather than the <img src=> tag

Jim I think you are right - TD's seem to be the most popular with some interest in D's and of course the enthusiasm for 16 valves.
One of the joys of buying old cars is that you can get those nice versions that you couldn't justify buying new. Had I been in the market for a BX estate in 1990 I could have paid £9700 for a 16 TGS, £10550 for a 19 TGD, £12441 for a TZD Turbo, £11350 for a TZS, £12600 for a 4X4 and £12750 for a TZi. As the performance of the TD is about the same as the 16 in reality would I have then paid £2741 + £832 for ABS but I might have paid £348 for PAS on the 16. ( net difference £3225)
Strangely enopugh I do see a number of 14's around and actually would be interested in having a ride in one as I wonder if the ride is best of all as the spheres are big and the anti-roll bars are thin, and the car is exceptionally light. Same goes for the 16 and the GTi all of which have merits of their own.
