Project BX Day 2

Post by Jon »

Didn't get home until nearly 8 last night, so didn't get a lot done.
Using light from garage (mental note, clear out double garage so I can get the car in there!)and lead lamp; managed to fit 2 front spheres, accumulator, air filter, battery, LHM tank. Also removed the diesel filter housing due to the amount of crud therein, cleaned with some truck wash, and refitted with new filter.
Tonight there will be no further work as I've got a nice journey, Birmingham to Gt Missenden then back to Swindon, to collect ABS type rear arm and 2 calipers from Louis.
True dedication to the BX cause or just plain stupid I guess. [:o)]

Nah your not crazy,
it's just fun tinkering with cars (when SWMBO allows [:D] ). As soon as the BX is on the road and there's not much to tinker with you'll probably go buy another project [}:)] (BX 16valve series I, R5 turbo, CX turbo etc [:p] [:o)])

I'm inspired by your new project to get one of my own. As a result, I've reacquired the TZI estate to get it over to France and stash it there so I can fly in and out rather than use the ferry.

I do hope so. There are still more BXs around than many may think, and too many of these are still being prematurely run into the ground, sometimes after a cossetted existence.
I parked next to a very tidy red 19TGD this morning that looked ripe for a project - until I saw and heard it drive away, drivebelts screaming and with a load of ladders and tools in the back. Painful.....

The TZI referred to in the above post is now spoken for.
I bought the car earlier this year to plunder it for its aircon system and passed it over to DLM.
It is now coming back to me for a quick! and cheap!! debug and a good tidy up.
Then Waxoyl (Yes, I know it is Galvanised but it is the best estate shell I ever saw!)
and a new battery and Isolator switch 'cos it will be parked in the open and not used for months at a time. P and O having decided to close the Western Channel route has persuaded me to research the cost of flying. Fifteen to thirty quid each way from Luton, 20 minutes away. That'll save me a fortune so I'll be parking the BX at Dinard, an hour's drive from Home. That should make the journey about 5 hours end to end and not the ten we do now from Southampton. And I get to go up in an aeroplane:-) Justification enough for a project!
I'll start another thread for the project "Project TZI".
I'll bet that with the belated recognition of the BX as an iconic statement of cool, (Web designers drive them so it must be true) Bernie is thinking twice about deserting to a Xantia!

Have their earnings dropped so much that they can no longer afford DS's then?[:D]

BX could become a new ersatz DS? do we respect them less because we have seen them grow from new objects of desire to old scrappers?, get yours now, in the last 1000 miles I have only seen four or five on the road, aspire to own a rarity and as stated on this forum a modern classic.

Give it 5 years or so and I reckon a BX will be worth as much as 3 Xantias, and a Xantia will be worth as much as 3 C5'S [:D]

Joking apart, This is the BX's last hurrah. The last group of them to be restored and cherished is almost certainly this one. As for Ersatz DSs, No. A car owing much to the DS in concept but thirty years younger in design. Thunderbird having put milk float motors in all the SMs and Mac users driving all the DSs, the future is bleak. CXs have nearly all returned to nature so the BX is all we have!
Gaining in value? Yes, they are up a bit on Ebay but really Diesel estates (The best ones if we ignore the 16v cars) struggle to be worth £500 and the 4x4 is worthless.
Good saloons are few and far between and still only worth £300-400. Even in their native land, they are not as common as they were.
On a recent trip home(UK) I saw no other BXs just two Maserati Coupes and three Continental GTs. Rare exotica then.

I agree, they are dieing out pretty quickly, and it will only be down to the home diyers and the dedicated enthusiasts that will keep them alive for the years to come.
I think they make a refreshing change to the mostly bland cars that are around, excluding the current crop of Sports soupes, but then the BX isn't in that class of car anyhow.
I've had mine nearly 6 years now, and it's here to stay :-)

They will at least always be recognisable, not gone and forgotten like Passats, Sierras and Montegos of a similar age. All the MK4 Escorts are gone as well (Not a bad thing!)
and most Renaults of the period are extinct. Can anybody even remember the contemporary Fiat models?
